What We Do

Lessons

Our lessons are based on offering clients safe, progressive and interesting instruction - the added ingredient being plenty of fun for horse and rider.

Young Riders' Lessons

Usually run Saturday mornings and after school, for riders under 7 years as their needs are very different from the older children. These half-hour classes are well supervised, each child having a helper who will lead or walk alongside the pony assisting the young rider. The emphasis is on learning and safety, with games and fun playing an important part.

Children's half-hour Lessons

From 4 years upwards; recommended for the beginner child, these lessons are carefully supervised. All beginners are on a leading rein with a competent and friendly leader who has been carefully trained to assist in providing the child with helpful advice and assisting the instructor in the safe conduct of the lesson.  Games and exercise to develop confidence and an understanding between pony and child also play a part. We feel that every young child should be aware that the pony is an animal with feelings not unlike our own and should not be discarded after riding, like a toy.

One Hour Group Lessons for Children

After initial introductory half-hour lessons, most children will feel ready to join a one hour class. These obviously give plenty of scope to the more experience rider. During one hour lessons, the basic skills in walk, trot and canter will be practiced as well as exercises to improve balance and co-ordination, reinforcing that special relationship between rider and their horse.

One Hour Group Lessons for Adults

These take place weekdays and weekends and may appeal if you are a beginner or have decided to take up riding again after a break and want to spend some time in the countryside learning or improving in a friendly class of riders with similar ambitions. Early lessons may be physically demanding, but they will be enjoyable and rewarding. For the enthusiastic rider, there are a series of progressive rising tests which they can work towards. Please discuss this with your instructor.

Private Lessons

Ideal for those wishing to improve their Dressage, Showjumping etc. These lessons are tailor-made for the individual, often taking the form of a lunge lesson where the client and the instructor can work on a one-to-one basis. Suitable for the beginner, novice, improver or advanced but not recommended for the younger child as we feel the format to be too intensive.

Hacking

A wonderful way to see the beautiful Surrey Hills countryside. All hacks are escorted with a high regard for safety. All one hour hacks are off-road along peaceful woodland tracks and bridleways.

Day Courses

Pony Days

These are extremely popular and run every Wednesday in all school holidays. Suitable for all levels of rider; from the young beginner to the more advanced teenager. A whole day with their 'own' pony helps to increase confidence and improve handling techniques encouraging the rider to develop an empathy with their pony.

Tuition is given for everything and the children's days are well supervised - a whole day of fun!

Adult Day Courses

We offer course for adults in 'horsemastership', in these courses we cover a number of topics relating to the care, management and working of the horse. B.H.S. Stage I and Horse Owner Certificates Levels I - IV run regularly.

.

Hen Parties

What an interesting and unusual way to celebrate with your friends. We are flexible and can offer you a leisurely hack in the countryside, a fun lesson in the school or even a horse-drawn carriage ride. Carriage Drives also available

Corporate Activities

We can offer equine related activity days; ideal for young (or not so young!) executives who need a break from office routine. Time for an injection of country air with hands-on fun and no riding experience necessary - satisfaction guaranteed! Activities are varied and tailored to your needs, but could include:

  • Introduction to the horse

  • Grooming and tacking up

  • Demonstration of mounting and riding in walk and trot

  • Riding session

  • Care of horse in stable

  • Demonstrations of lunging, long reigning and carriage driving

A light lunch with tea and coffee is included

Further Training

As Beechwood is approved by both the BHS and ABRS, we are able to offer our riders the opportunity to train for the Progressive Riding Certificate and we run un-mounted courses for all levels of the Horse Owner's Certificate.
